Generation and Transformations

International Symposium

Generation and Transformations in Women’s Writing:
Interdisciplinary Perspective
on Post-Communist and Postcolonial Studies

Poland, Kraków, May 14-15, 2010

The main aim of the symposium is to initiate the international debate on the intersections between the generation experience(s), social, political and cultural transformation as captured and interpreted in women’s writing. The title of the symposium bears double meaning: generation as a process (creation or making) through which the change appears and which later is conceptualized as a transformation; and the generation as an age-group or a group of people sharing similar experience and being the witness and agent of the political, social and cultural transformation.

We wish to concentrate in our debate on women’s creativity and their writing. We understand women’s writing very broadly: as a literary text and documentaries, both as printed texts and translated into other art medium. We focus on the local, namely Polish context, which, however, we want to illuminate through comparison with other cultural perspectives. We are going to juxtapose various methodological approaches such as postcolonial and comparative with the post-communist studies, set to elaborate the role of national literatures and art. We are also interested in discussing the issues that involve the concept of the generation, whether in a world-wide, national-wide or local context, and the aspects of post-communist, or post-independence, transformation in contemporary critical thinking in which the postcolonial theories may prove useful and explanatory tools.

We hope our seymposium will encourage the participants to build the research–network interested in the contemporary women’s artistic expression and such issues like body, generation and transformation considered from the various methodological perspectives.
